A Great Little Piece of Ab Workout Equipment
One of the best pieces of ab workout equipment you can pick up is a little guy called the “medicine ball”. It’s called that because back in the day, the information “medicine” was a synonym for “health”, so it’s really a “health ball”. at any rate. The thing works.
For those of you unfamiliar with what a medicine ball is, it’s basically a weighted rubber ball a little bit smaller than a basketball. They range in weight from two pounds up to twenty pounds or more, but most of them are around six or eight pounds.
These little guys have been used since the time of the Greeks as a fitness training aid. Granted, they didn’t make them out of rubber back then (they used leather), but the point is, it’s been around for a long time, and for good reason. A medicine ball is a cheap, functional exercise device that is extremely versatile, especially for chief or abs training.
Since it’s light, it can offer a little bit of resistance, but not too much. As I mention in many of my articles on training abs properly, you want to avoid using heavy resistance, as this only builds bulk… an undesirable trait in the abs area. Instead, light weights with more repetitions increases the tone of the muscles without making them too big and bulging.
Additionally, since the ball is so small and easily maneuverable, it creates a nearly endless number of possible exercises. Here’s one that’s great for the side abs or “oblique” muscles. Sit down on the floor with the ball next to you on one side. Twist and pick up the ball with both hands, twist the other way, and set the ball down on your opposite side. Then pick it back up and twist to put it back where you started. Keep going back and forth like this… you’ll start to feel it in your side abs soon enough.
Simple, right? Anybody can do it. But it effectively targets an area of the abs that is truly kind of tough to get to.
And they’re cheap! You can pick one up for twenty to thirty dollars, and they last virtually forever. You REALLY have to beat one of these things up to break it- in fact, it might require hitting it with a hatchet. Odds are, you don’t treat your exercise equipment this way.
There’s any number of fun little exercises you can come up with, either alone or in tandem with a workout partner. Tossing the ball back and forth by various motions is the typical way the medicine ball has been used over the centuries to rehabilitate and aim people. Boxers have someone drop a medicine ball on their abs as they lie confront-up on the floor to simulate getting gut-punched.
The only real limitation on the variety of exercises you can come up with is your imagination. At first, of course, you’re going to want to stick with the typical moves, but once you get the hang of using a medicine ball, it’s really not too hard to make up your own variations.
Remember, one of the nice things about ab workouts is they’re cheap. You don’t need a ton of expensive equipment. Knowledge and desire are the main elements. So don’t break the bank- stick with inexpensive, versatile ab exercise equipment like the medicine ball.
